In an interview for Euronews Albania, the candidate of the Democratic Party for the district of Durres, Ferdinand Xhaferaj said that the government has failed in the management of the earthquake aftermath, because “15 months later, no one has been held accountable”.

“The people of Durres will never find peace if justice won’t prevail”, said Xhaferaj as he recalled his stance that it was not the earthquake that “killed people”, but the “urban massacre” and “construction violations”.

The candidate of the Democrats claims that the government quickly demolished 36 buildings severely damaged by the quake in order to “hide the evidence”. Xhaferaj said that some of the cases are connected to two former Socialist officials, but did not give away any specific names.

He added that although some persons were under investigation by the prosecution, they were appointed in top posts at the municipality, in exchange for “their code of silence”.

For Euronews Albania, the Socialist candidate in Durres, Klodiana Spahiu, admitted that the post-earthquake reconstruction process has met some delays, but blamed in part bureaucratic procedures and the pandemic.

DP’s candidate said that the opposition has envisaged a concrete plan to change the situation in Durres and turn the coastal city into “the epicenter of changes”.
