As was foreseen, the meeting between EU’s foreign affairs ministers, which precedes the meeting of the most important European leaders from March 25th-26th, didn’t recommend the appointment in their agenda, of the resolution on the Western Balkans matter.
“The ministers were informed on the Western Balkans, especially on recent events and on the meetings of the Council of Stabilization-Association as well as on the recent visit to the region of Special Envoy on the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue and other regional matters in the Western Balkans, Miroslav Lajçak. We shall have a more in-depth discussion about the Western Balkans in the next meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers. Allow me to emphasize that the Western Balkans has been and continues to be a priority for the European Union,” stated, the High Representative of the EU on Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell.
The two-day summit of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, was focused on the violation of human rights and establishment of sanctions on 11 individuals in 6 countries.
The summit didn’t reach conclusions on Turkey either, something that will be discussed in the next two days in the Summit of the Council of Europe, where European leaders as well as the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cavosoglu, will participate.
The chief of foreign politics, Borrel emphasized that starting from December 2020, the European Council has received positive signals from the Turkish leadership. However, despite the fact that steps were taken to resolve tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean, the process remains brittle.
