No consensus was reached in the EU–Albania Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee on adopting a joint resolution on Albania’s EU accession process.

The dispute between representatives of the Socialist Party and the Democratic Party centred on the opposition’s proposed amendments and how Albania’s progress toward European Union membership should be reflected in the document.

The Democratic Party said the failure to reach an agreement resulted from the Socialist Party’s rejection of more than 30 amendments proposed by the opposition. According to the DP, the amendments addressed key issues related to EU integration, including the fight against corruption, respect for court decisions, strengthening the rule of law, transparency, and institutional accountability.

The Democrats claimed that their amendments received the support of Members of the European Parliament serving on the EU–Albania Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee, but were ultimately not adopted because of the position taken by the Socialist Party representatives.

The Socialist Party, meanwhile, said its MPs and the Members of the European Parliament voted in favour of the recommendations supporting Albania’s EU accession process. According to the SP, the draft prepared by the Committee’s Secretariat did not require amendments, as it was accompanied by the European Parliament’s resolution on Albania and by the Albanian Parliament’s consensus resolution on European integration.

The Socialists said they supported several of the opposition’s amendments but rejected wording that, in their view, undermined the balance of the document and failed to reflect the progress acknowledged by European institutions.

The SP accused the opposition of attempting to remove references to Albania’s achievements in the EU integration process, while the DP insisted that European standards require concrete reforms and measurable results.
