North Macedonia has been grappling with surging COVID-19 cases, with 1.511 new infections recorded on the last day only.

The high figures recorded mean that the epidemiological situation is quite concerning even though the Committee on Infectious Diseases just a few weeks ago placed the country under tighter restriction to combat the spread of the virus.

On Thursday, 32 citizens succumbed to COVID-19 while so far, the virus has claimed 3,781 lives, according to data provided by Worldometers.

Euronews Albania correspondent in Skopje, Ferikan Iljazi, said that despite the alarming infection rates, health authorities have not considered taking new measures blaming the new strain detected in Britain for the fast spread of the virus in the population.

The opposition has also pressed the government to consider taking more measures but to no avail.

“The high figures of the pandemic have returned over the last few days. Health authorities are discussing whether it will be required to take more restrictive measures but concluded that it will not be necessary because the British strain spreads at a higher pace and measures would not yield any results. Night curfew hours and no gatherings will remain in force. There has also been mounting pressure by the opposition and several critics over the alarming figures we’re seeing”, reported Iljazi.

In regards to hospital capacities, the situation at the moment is not being considered as problematic as the country just recently boosted its capacities. Currently, there are 250 free hospital beds on a state level and 1.600 patients receiving medical care.
