As of 1 January 2022, Albania’s population is estimated at 2,793,592 inhabitants, marking a decrease of 1.3% compared to data from last year.
According to the latest INSTAT report, the factors behind this are the emigration of some 42,000 people and the negative birth-death ratio.
In 2021, the natural increase was -3.296 inhabitants, the first time that this figure was negative.

Declining population figures were accompanied by a rise in the average age, which results 38.2 years old.
Around one-third of the country’s population lives in Tirana (32.9%). The other two cities with the highest population figures are Durres (10.4%) and Fier (10%).
