The President of Albania, Ilir Meta, has returned to parliament a bill on “Foreign Workers”.

In his argument countering the bill passed in June, the president says that the country lacks the necessary capacities to receive a potential influx of foreign labor.

Meta expressed his concern that Albania might face an inundation of requests from third-world countries, which can go beyond what the country can actually accommodate.

“If Albania is not offering employment opportunities, welfare, stability, and security to its own citizens, how can it offer them to foreigners”, asked Meta.

According to him, accepting a wide number of requests as a result of simplified criteria can only be done after a deep policy analysis. The government’s scope, from the perspective of the president, is only short-term and mainly focuses on the labor force, instead of the massive number of Albanian citizens leaving the country.

“Depopulation is the biggest drama happening to the country”, he declared.

Meta called for an immediate assessment of the current situation and warned that if it is neglected it would have “catastrophic consequences”.
