The US Ambassador to Tirana, Yuri Kim, took it on Twitter to pose a few questions to the candidates nominated by former premier Sali Berisha for the by-elections.
Ambassador Kim questioned what will these candidates promise to the electorate if they are being endorsed by ‘someone designated by the US for significant corruption’.
Questions for candidates: If your main sponsor is someone designated by the US for significant corruption, what exactly are you promising voters? Who will own you if you win and what will you owe them? What should Albanians expect? What should the US expect?

The State Department declared Berisha ‘persona non grata’ in reference to activities that took place during his time as prime minister.
“In his official capacity as Prime Minister of Albania in particular, Berisha was involved in corrupt acts, such as misappropriation of public funds and interfering with public processes, including using his power for his own benefit and to enrich his political allies and his family members at the expense of the Albanian public’s confidence in their government institutions and public officials”, reads the statement released by the State Department.
Shortly after, the leader of the Democratic Party expelled Berisha from the parliamentary group, propelling the creation of a new faction within the party.
Then, Berisha formed the House of Freedom in order to participate in the by-elections due on March 6.
