“The last thing I think we should be doing is establishing enclaves, as suggested by the association of Serbian municipalities”, declared the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Bob Mendez.
Menendez criticized the Trump administration for exerting pressure upon Kosovo only, and that putting on the table discussions about land swaps was wrong.
“Unfortunately, the Trump administration put all the pressure on Kosovo and nothing on Serbia and Belgrade. And this created real consequences at the end of the day. I certainly do not believe that among the things that are being talked about there should be land swaps between Kosovo and Serbia”, said Menendez, during his word at an event organized by the Albanian American Civic League (AACL).
He also expressed his concern about the lack of progress reached through the dialogue process.
Meanwhile, several American policymakers called on US President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to engage in finding a permanent solution for Kosovo and Serbia.
In the letter, they also mention the increased tensions that arose last week over a license plates row, as well as the Serbian military aircraft spotted near the border.
“We urge you to denounce the recent escalation of tensions and Serbian military mobilization, as well as encourage your administration in joining our partners in the EU and NATO, to support the Dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia in finding a peaceful and lasting solution”, a statement in the letter read.
