Democratic MP, Tritan Shehu said on tonight’s ‘Now’ that the changes that are being proposed to be made to the Family Code, are trying to pull our society away from the concept of the traditional family. The former health minister also said that in order to change adoption regulations, we don’t need to meddle with the Family Code.
“They say that a heterosexual couple living together for more than 3 years can adopt. This means that you can create a family even outside of marriage. In our understanding, family isn’t simply cohabitation. By doing this, we’re messing with our family model and painting another image that is different from what we have in our Constitution,” – he said.
Shehu also declared that at this time, we shouldn’t be taking away limitations for adoption but adding them even further, otherwise, we’re exposing children to more risks.
“They’re saying that a 21-year-old can adopt a 3-year-old and to me, this exposes the child to danger. This can apply to a family member that has close relations to the child, even though in such cases, I would still prefer guardianship over adoption,” – said the Democratic MP.
