Starting on Tuesday, attorneys will begin a 4-day strike.

The head of the Albanian Attorneys Chamber, Maksim Haxhia, declared today that for four days in a row, starting from tomorrow, lawyers will be boycotting every court session on a national level, except for the ones that decide on security measures like arrests, etc.

Haxhia maintained that whosoever impedes this decision will face disciplinary measures or even have their licenses revoked.

“None of our requests has been approved. We asked that with these changes made to the Judicial Map, we could have at least kept 4 Appeals Courts unchanged. There should have at least been one Appeals Court in Shkoder, one in Durres, one in Elbasan, and one in Tirana. Merging them all down into one single Appeals Court is completely unacceptable. Our strike should serve as an alarm bell to the Ministry of Justice since these changes will be approved by the Council of Ministers. It is a boycott based on the law and whoever obstructs this decision may face disciplinary measures and could even risk having their license revoked,” – said Haxhia.

The changes to the new judicial map would mean that the entire nation will only have a total of 13 first instance courts, 2 administrative courts, and 1 appeals court.

This was a proposal made by the High Judicial Council for the country’s new judicial map following months of consultations with various interest groups.

The High Judicial Council (KLGJ) has approved the draft, which will now be forwarded to the Council of Ministers, the High Prosecution Council, the General Prosecution, and finally the Ministry of Justice.
