Construction on the Blue Corridor – or the highway connecting Albania with Greece on the south and with Croatia on the north – is set to begin work soon.

The project is not entirely new as it was interrupted for two years due to the pandemic.

Infrastructure minister, Belinda Balluku, announced that a deal has been reached with her Greek homolog, allowing construction sites to be opened simultaneously in both countries.

“For us, this is the right time to start over this project, but it is also the moment when Greece will begin work on its part, which connects the Ionian highway – from its exit point in Ioannina – with the Kakavija border crossing”, said Balluku.

The 1,500-kilometer-highway has a segment that runs for 318 kilometers and passes through Albania. According to the project outline, this highway will cost €1.5 billion euros, starting from Muriqan and ending in Kakavija.

“This project will build a connection between our two countries and we hope that Montenegro will finish its part as well in the near future, in order to connect to Croatia – as is outlined in the project – which will extend all the way to the very last point, i.e. the city of Kalamata in Greece”, said the infrastructure minister.

During her visit to Greece, minister Balluku signed two more agreements – one on the Pogradec-Kastoria railway and another, related to power exchange.

Minister Balluku gave further details in an exclusive interview for Euronews Greece.
