The Central Bank has held 3 auctions for the purchase of currency in October, with the aim of stopping the fall of the euro in the exchange rate with the lek.
The interventions are small in size; purchases were made only with some banks, which quoted the euro at lower levels than other banks. The amount of these operations has not been made public, however, the euro has tended to gain points during these days and is being exchanged at 98.8 Lek.
The Bank of Albania held several auctions in the months of April-June, where it attracted 272 million euros, with the aim of increasing the foreign exchange reserve.
Meanwhile, in addition to auction purchases, from May 2, 2024, the Bank of Albania has also begun interventions in the foreign exchange market in order to fulfill the objectives of the monetary policy, through the purchase of 137 million euros.
The interventions have not had a strong effect on the exchange rate, which leaves the euro in quotes below 100 lek for several months, however the governor has stated that the Bank has taken measures to stimulate payments in lek within the country, to discourage transactions in euro.
