The rift among Democrats appears to have made its way to the Albanian Parliament after the head of the DP expelled MPs that sided with Sali Berisha.
In a recent shuffle, the DP appointed Enkelejd Alibeaj as the new head of the party’s parliament group.
Several Democrat MPs have called on the Parliament to disregard Basha’s request.
Democrat MP Oerd Bylykbashi warned that this sets a dangerous precedent that could potentially “damage democracy and the parliament”.
According to the MPs expelled from the DP group, no one has the right to remove them as this is in violation of the regulation.
Another MP, Belind Kellici, called on the speaker of the assembly to revoke the announcement as it is “beyond her jurisdiction”.
Parliament speaker Lindita Nikolla responded that she had only implemented DP’s request after the latter determined who will be the members of its parliamentary group.
The head of the parliamentary group of the Socialist Party, Taulant Balla, said that the parliament speaker is obliged to convey during a session the decisions taken by all parliament groups, as in the recent case.
He also called on the DP to address the issue in the upcoming plenary session.
7 MPs are required to form a parliamentary group. The opposition currently has 3 groups, one belongs to the DP and two to its allies.
