Bektashi believers celebrated Ashura Day on Tuesday with a ceremony held at the World Headquarters of the Bektashi Order.
According to the Bektashi calendar, this day is observed after ten days of fasting in memory of the 72 martyrs who gave their lives for freedom in the Battle of Karbala.
The ceremony was led by the World Leader of the Bektashi Order, Haji Dede Edmond Brahimaj, who in his message to attendees called on everyone to do good deeds, especially in these difficult times the world is facing.
“It is a special day for all Bektashis around the world. The meaning and symbolism of this universal dessert, blessed in every Bektashi household, is profound. Compete in doing good deeds, and seize every opportunity to act righteously. On this marked day, our duty is to preserve humanity, values, family, virtues, spiritual and mental well-being,” said Haji Dede Edmond Brahimaj.
The Bektashi leader also called for an end to conflicts and wars, in favor of peace.
“The efforts for freedom, peace, and democracy are our duty today, but above all, the duty of our world leaders to work for peace. We pray for humanity to find peace and kindness, for conflicts and wars to end, and to move forward in the development of democracy. Our eyes must be turned toward prayers to God,” added Baba Mondi.
Ashura Day originates from the Arabic word “ashr,” meaning “ten,” and corresponds to the tenth day of the month of Muharram—a day when the traditional ashura dessert is made, symbolizing abundance, sharing, and unity.
