Former prime minister and DP chair, Sali Berisha called a meeting today with several members of DP’s current Leadership that have come out in favor of holding a National Assembly.

Sources near Euronews Albania, say that the Democrats that were present in today’s meeting with Berisha were the following: Belind Këlliçi, Edi Paloka, Albana Vokshi, Gent Strazimiri, Aldo Bumçi, Ivi Kaso and Flamur Noka.

A few days ago, the former PM submitted a list of 4.200 signatures to DP officials, from Democrats that wish to hold a National Assembly. Through them, Berisha is asking for Lulzim Basha’s resignation as party chair and has hinted at wanting to regain control of the Democratic Party.

After getting ahold of these signatures, the head of DP’s National Council, Edi Paloka, declared that their verification will be conducted during the National Assembly, set to take place on December 11.

In addition, he also noted that their verification will be completed without infringing on anyone’s right to privacy, which means that the case file will stay closed until the day of the National Assembly.

DP’s General Secretary, Gazmend Bardhi, reacted to this recent development, saying that Berisha aims to ‘turn DP into a bunker’. He also added that none of these signatures have followed protocol.

In conclusion, Bardhi declared that he respects all the sacrifices of former PM Berisha and his supporters, however, according to him ‘personal troubles’ should be dealt with outside of the party – referring to Berisha’s non-grata designation by the U.S Department of State.
