The outbreak of the bird flu in Albania has raised many questions on whether it is still safe to eat poultry products.

But according to the Dean of Biotechnology and Food Faculty at the University of Agriculture in Tirana, there is no need to be alarmed as the flu is not transmissible to humans.

“The public should stay calm and naturally continue to consume chicken and eggs. The strain that is circulating in Albania does not affect people as it is not transmissible from animals to humans. However, there needs to be some prudence”, explained Prof. Kapllan Sulaj.

Prof. Sulaj said that poultry farms affected should take their products off the market.

But can we detect whether an egg or a chicken is infected?

“Infection can only be determined by lab analysis”, said Prof. Sulaj.
