From July-September, a total of 7.404 babies were born in Albania, whereas 6.037 citizens passed away. These stats show a positive natural growth of our population by 1.367 citizens.

However, during the same timeframe, only half of the Albanian districts experienced growth.

The highest change in natural growth was registered in Tirana, where the number of births surpassed the number of deaths by 1.085 citizens, whereas the district of Lezha came in last, with a positive growth of only 45 new births.

On the other hand, in 6 districts, the number of deaths surpassed the number of births. Vlora and Shkodra are on top of that list, leaving behind Fier as the district with the lowest natural population decline.

The demographic index has returned to normal and the usual trends, compared to the onset of the pandemic in March 2020, when Albania experienced a wave of mortalities attributed to COVID-19 that resulted in negative population growth.

According to INSTAT projections, the Albanian population in 2031 will be 2.746.000. This means 36 000 citizens less than what was recorded in the 2021 population census.
