Former MP Alqi Bllako surrendered to the police on Thursday evening, a police declaration read.

Bllako is currently at the Tirana Police Directorate.

Law enforcement authorities stated that stories circulating on Thursday in the Albanian, that Bllako had fled the country, were fake.

Bllako is accused of abuse of office and corruption over faulty land expropriation procedures at the site of the Fier incinerator plant.

SPAK issued an arrest warrant against him on Tuesday.

Although the police said that Bllako handed himself to authorities, it did not specify the actual time, while the official police statement was only released on Friday morning.

Ambiguity on the events that ensued before his surrender

After Bllako submitted a resignation letter to the Assembly, the court released an arrest warrant on Thursday around 4 PM.

The police could have arrested Bllako from that moment on, but they didn’t until Bllako decided to hand himself in, allegedly on Thursday evening.

The police have not given any explanation why it delayed his arrest, and they only released a statement after the story of his escape was making roundabouts in the media.

In the police statement issued, the police were careful to emphasize that Bllako surrendered late in the evening on Thursday.

Sources near the police confirmed for Euronews Albania, that in fact, Bllako walked into the police station in the early hours of Friday.

Bllako will appear in court on Saturday at 11 AM, in a session that will determine whether he will remain in custody while awaiting trial.

Doubts that he had fled the country were fueled by a photo posted on Instagram from his attorney, showing the window of a plane on a flight captioned ‘Goodbye and Hugs’.
