Bulgarians at home and abroad are exercising their right to vote today and will be electing their new state legislators.

11,845 polling stations have opened doors inside the country, while outside the Bulgarian territory are 775 polling stations in 62 different countries.

One of these countries is Albania, where the vote will be held throughout the day today.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria has said that in Albania the process started at 07:00 and is continuing normally.

Bulgarians with the right to vote, who are residents of Albania, can vote in five different polling stations.

One in Tirana on the premises of the Embassy of Bulgaria, another center in Elbasan, followed by Korca, Durres, and Kukes. About 250 citizens with Bulgarian citizenship have the right to vote in Albania.

The Albanian state recognizes Bulgarians as a minority based on a law that was approved back in 2017.

Apart from some slightly harsher tones and a general dissatisfaction with the current situation due to Bulgaria’s veto against North Macedonia which doesn’t allow for the opening of negotiations for either country since Macedonians are in a coalition with Albania in their EU integration path, over the years Bulgarians and Albanians have primarily shared very good relations on all fronts.

The majority of polling stations outside Bulgarian territory are in Turkey (166), followed by the United Kingdom (126), Germany (77), Spain (65), the US (55), Italy (26), Greece (24), the Netherlands (23), France (16), and Austria and Belgium (15).

Bulgaria will be holding its fourth parliamentary elections in 18 months today.
