In Durrës, excavations have been started for several weeks in the archaeological area known as the Byzantine forum. Experts raised concerns that research is not being done according to standards.

“The excavations that are done behind me are systematic excavations that are done to glorify an object, but not to read our history.”

This is what the urban planner Artan Kacani says, regarding the latest expedition of the Institute of Archeology to one of the most important sites of Durrës, that of the Byzantine Forum.

Employees of the municipality there are closing the pit, which according to Kacani was not opened for research purposes.

“Today’s archaeological excavations have been predatory excavations. They intended to open a hole in the middle of the walls, understand what was there and then close it again, but not in their reading and interpretation”, – Artan Kacani, urban planner

“At the moment the excavations look like a drop in an ocean. As long as the research and scientific objectives are not defined, then we have unfair interventions.”

The problem remains for him, the impossibility of history enthusiasts to see and touch the Forum and the findings from it.

“The archaeological excavations behind me are excavations, which have never been offered to the public in an open way”, – Artan Kacani, urban planner.

The Byzantine Forum, which dates back to the end of the century. V e.s. and was used until the 8th century AD, it is located in the historical center of the city and is among the rare monuments of the Byzantine era in Durrës.

During previous expeditions, archaeologists have emphasized that traces of Hellenistic and Illyrian culture can be discovered under the finds of fragments of Roman residential buildings.
