On average, 130 citizens call the emergency number for COVID-related issues on a daily basis.

As new infections soar, more citizens are seeking at-home assistance.

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) carry out some 77 visits per day, compared to 63 from last year.

“We’re now heading to a person with COVID. In all truthfulness, the first confrontation is always hard. You never know what the situation will be like until we get there. On the other hand, there are personal insecurities, like being careful all the time”, says Juna Hitaj, from EMS personnel.

The most common symptoms displayed are fever, difficulty breathing, and headache.

Two years in the pandemic, widespread fear of getting hospitalized prevails. Many people try to stay away from medical facilities but have to fill in a form discharging EMTs from medical responsibility.

According to official estimates, there are 23,000 active COVID-19 cases across the country. Of these, only 130 are being treated at the hospital.

“There are sick people both at home and at the hospital. But, mild virus forms can be treated at home. Infections will drop by February”, said Dr. Skender Brataj, the head of the National Medical Emergency services.

Dr. Brataj maintains that Omicron may serve to reach herd immunity.

More than 253,000 citizens have tested positive for COVID-19 in Albania from the beginning of the pandemic.
