The President of the Municipal Assembly of Leposaviq, Gorski Buriç, had his car burned, the Kosovo Police announced.

According to the announcement, the law enforcement authorities said that they went to the scene of the incident after they received the information at around 04:20 on January 28 that a car with license plate RKS – Republic of Kosovo was burning in Leposaviq.

“Near the car, near the engine, a plastic bottle and a rag smelling of gasoline were found, which is suspected to have been placed as a starter to burn the car,” the announcement said.

The police added that they are taking all actions to investigate this case, which was initiated as “arson”.

The motive of this incident is still unknown. But, in the past, in the municipalities in the north of Kosovo – Leposaviq, Zveçan, Zubin Potok and North Mitrovica – cars with RKS license plates were burned or damaged.

The Serbs in the north of Kosovo for a long time had opposed a decision by the Government of Kosovo to convert car license plates issued by Serbia – which Pristina considers illegal – into RKS- Republic of Kosovo license plates.

However, in recent months, the interest of Serbs in Kosovo to convert license plates to RKS increased.

Finally, Kosovo and Serbia have also begun to allow cars with the license plates of their respective states to move freely, without the need for the state symbols on the license plates to be covered with stickers.
