The Constitutional Court has turned down on Monday the request made by the Democratic Party asking to force the parliament into approving the establishment of an inquiry commission for Italian businessman Francesco Beccheti.

In its argument released to the press, the court cited insufficient votes among its current members.

Currently, the court has 7 out of the 9 members required for its normal operation.

A majority vote of at least five of its members is necessary for the court to issue a verdict. In the opposite, every request must be refuted.

The general secretary of the Democratic Party, Gazment Bardhi, criticized the Constitutional Court, claiming that it is hampering the investigation of a lawsuit costing €110 million to the Albanian state.

“Regretful that a reformed Constitutional Court is reforming itself in harm to the public interest, becoming a shield of corruption and government unlawfulness”, he said.
