The Constitutional Court has overturned president Ilir Meta’s request to dismiss the panel of judges that are meant to rule on his impeachment. The Constitutional also declared that the claims made by Meta’s defense teams on the 7 judges: Vitore Tusha, Perparim Kalo, Fiona Papajorgji, Marsida Xhaferllari, Fiona Papajorgji, Sonila Bejtja and Elsa Toska, are baseless and don’t refer to the Constitution.
Earlier today, the president’s legal representatives declared that the present Constitutional judges should resign due to an invested conflict of interest.
According to the president, the Constitution’s Chief Justice, Vitore Tusha, has been in office for more than 5 years – overstepping her term’s legal bounderies.
Meta also accused Fiona Papajorgji of serious professional and ethical breaches during her ruling of the case involving the disputed legitimacy of the 2019 local elections.
Meanwhile, Meta’s team accussed judge Perparim Kalo of being publicly exposed for his impartiality while also casting doubts on his appointment which was allegedly conducted without a fair race.
Back in June 2021, 104 MPs voted in favor of president Meta’s impeachment.
According to Socialist lawmakers, Meta violated the Constitution by openly siding with one of the parties participating in the last general elections.
The Parliament vote was based on report findings drafted by an Inquiry Commission, which was tasked with investigating president Meta’s stances and general behavior during the electoral campaign leading up to the April elections.
