Private labs carried out 380.000 COVID tests in 2021.

This figure makes up 4% of the number of travelers from Albania, where tests were a mandatory requirement for all international flights.

The disproportionate figures cast a shadow of doubt on a potential forgery of lab test results.

The Albanian health minister licensed 12 private labs for COVID tests, some of which were opened entirely for that purpose.

The ministry even renounced from doing travel-related testing, leaving the task entirely to private laboratories.

The first labs that got licensed secured a revenue 12 times higher than previous years.

Genius Lab earned €1,9 million, compared to €147.000 in 2019.

Intermedica lab quadrupled its revenue, cashing in €2,2 million during the first pandemic year.

Private hospitals were also allowed to do COVID tests however, they have not included their labs’ balance sheets in their turnovers, making it increasingly challenging to look through their invoices.

Initially, labs were charging around €98 per COVID test, a price that has currently dropped to €28.
