Population growth depends on a surplus of births over deaths but the opposite happened in our country during 2021, when the death rate surpassed the birth rate with a difference of 3.296, according to INSTAT.
Tirana was the district that experienced the highest natural growth rate which was reflected through a surplus of 1.642 births over deaths.
On the other hand, Vlora was the district with the lowest natural growth, seeing a surplus of 1.222 deaths over births last year.
In addition, a total of 27.284 babies were born last year, marking a decline of 2.8% compared to 2020. Meanwhile, a total of 30.580 citizens lost their lives in 2021 – an increase of 10.8% compared to the previous year.
The district with the highest number of births was Tirana with 9.473 newborns, whereas the district with the lowest birthrate last year was Gjirokastra with only 451 new births.
In terms of the death rate, the district with the lowest number of deaths was Kukes with 612 deaths, whereas Tirana experienced the highest death rate last year with 7.831 deaths.
