The Democratic Party presented a legal initiative to Parliament today, to lower the VAT tax from 20% to 6%, as a way to help boost the economy.

The decision was made yesterday during a meeting of DP’s parliamentary group and was submitted to Parliament earlier today by Democratic MP, Jorida Tabaku.

In a statement for the press, Tabaku said that DP’s proposed initiative aimed to help vulnerable groups that would in turn contribute to bringing up their purchasing power and boost the economy. According to Tabaku, this initiative has been undertaken by all EU member states as a way of promoting economic growth.

“Our proposal is quite simple and very straightforward. We should help that part of society, whose buying power has been reduced. The results would reach 17 billion LEK, which is nothing compared to what these past years’ state budgets have been able to offer.

They’ve waived the mineral tax or the VAT tax on yachts. These incentives have done little to help out citizens, they’ve only benefited a limited amount of people, instead of the entire economy.

What we are looking to achieve is to at least, have this government show its support for citizens, once every eight years,” said Tabaku.
