The Democratic Party (DP) has decided to vote in favor of the extension of the vetting term, in exchange for the fulfillment of its two main conditions: territorial reform and the electoral one.

This decision was made today during the meeting of DP’s Parliamentary Group.

“Without a strong, clean, and independent judicial, Albania won’t make any economic progress nor will it move closer to its EU integration. DP is the greatest contributor to Albania’s process of EU integration and we will never make any decision that go against this process or damage it,” – said Lulzim Basha.

After the vote on the extension of the vetting bodies’ mandate, Parliament will be voting on the establishment of 2 separate commissions that will be responsible for the immediate fulfillment of DP’s demands.

In December 2021, the Venice Commission recommended the continuation of the vetting process in Albania, calling it an important procedure that is in line with European standards.

On Tuesday, the EU delegation and the US embassy in Albania called on all MPs, regardless of their political affiliation, to vote in favor of this vetting extension. Even OSCE representatives in Tirana have made similar calls recently.

The ruling Socialist majority has been making consecutive calls on the need to extend the mandate of our current vetting bodies.

Their current mandate is set to end in June 2022, whereas the proposed extension would continue through to 2024.
