When only one week has passed when political parties submitted their list of candidates for potential MPs in the Albanian Assembly to the Central Election Commission (CEC), three verification claims have been deposited to the decriminalization unit of the General Prosecution Office.

Euronews Albania sent an inquiry to the organ right after the submission of the list of candidates and learned that three candidates are currently under investigation to determine whether they are eligible to continue the race.

Two of the complaints filed near CEC were aimed at two independent candidates, according to sources they are Bojken Abazi running in Tirana and Pal Shkambi in Shkodra.

It is not the first time that Shkambi’s name comes up at CEC. In 2013 he was running under the banner of the Christian-Democratic Party and was fined by the commission for violating gender quotas.

Also, in 2017 he was appointed member of the Independent Qualification Commission, a post that he did not get to serve at all.

Apart from the Central Election Commission, verification complaints have also been submitted by major political subjects. The Democratic Party requested the commission to verify one of its candidates, namely Rezart Tusha, racing under the Democrat’s logo for the district of Durres.

In its response, the General Prosecution Office reiterated that the verification process has commenced for 3 candidates and the conclusions will be sent to the institution that has made the claim.

The foreign diplomatic corps has continuously urged political subjects to name “clean figures”  in their party lists or else they will be “held accountable”.
