In the past 2 years, we’ve seen a rapid decline of the labor force in Albania’s agriculture sector, going from a total of 200 000 to 60 000.

This was the stark warning laid down by Kujtim Hoxha, an expert in employment insurance and benefits during an interview for Euronews Albania’s ‘Good Morning’.

In addition, he underlined that in recent years, there’s also been a definite decline in workplace contributions paid by employees for the retirement plan of their choice.

“The ratio between contributor-beneficiary for all types of pension plans used to be 5 to 1. Now, it’s dropped to 1-1.1,” – he added.

Hoxha continued by saying that a woman reaches her retirement age at 61 years and 4 months. At the current rate, a woman’s retirement age is on track to reach 65.

“It will go up for men as well – 2 months at a time – until it reaches 67 years old,” – added Hoxha.

In addition, Good Morning Albania’s other guest, Irena Xhani – who is an economy expert – gave her take on the matter, saying that in the future we will also see an increase in the number of senior citizens in our country and a decline in the number of employees who pay their benefits.

Xhani also added that the government needs to intervene promptly in order to change the current pension schemes so that they can fit the needs of our workforce and future retirees.
