In a statement for the press after their meeting with the prime minister, representatives from the farmers’ protest said that even though the government doesn’t get their situation, they had agreed to organize talks with experts so that their needs and demands can be heard.

According to them, the government doesn’t understand the reality of the farmer’s condition and the difficulties they’ve faced with because of a lack of market orientation from the Ministry of Agriculture.

A representative from the farmers protest, ‘blocked PM Rama’s way’, who invited them in a meeting.

In today’s plenum, the new fiscal package and 2022 state budget are expected to be put up for discussion.

For days now, farmers from different cities have been staging protests and calling out against the changes proposed to be made to the fiscal package on agriculture for the upcoming year.

What are the farmers demanding?

1 – Direct subsidies for farmers, no less than 10 LEK per kilogram, clearly visible in all tax receipts.

2 – Exporters ask for 30 LEK per kilogram, which should be provided directly from the Customs Directory without additional bureaucratic procedures.

3 – Equalization of VAT tax when selling and VAT tax when purchasing.

4 – Nullify the new measure introduced in the 2022 fiscal package planning to add 10% of VAT tax to agricultural inputs.

5 – Government should take necessary measures in order to check for the quality of agricultural products; set up accredited labs that are accessible by all.

6 – Government should regulate commercial relationships within the agricultural sector by law, between farmers and bad traders that don’t pay their bills on time.
