Professor and psychologist, Nora Malaj said on Euronews Albania’s ‘Now’ that the macabre murder of the 8-year-old in Fier, was forewarned, seeing that the murderer was a repeat offender and a contingent that should have been expected to degenerate to this extent.

This might’ve not happened, according to Malaj, if relevant government institutions and authorities were attentive enough.

In addition, Malaj maintained that what is most unfortunate about this tragic event is the very oblivion of our public institutions that keep being faced with similar incidents and don’t react nor reflect.

In addition, Albania’s ombudsman, Erinda Ballanca gave her take saying that the tragic murder in Fier was followed by a massive public response because we all realized that it could have happened to us and that the necessary mechanisms meant to prevent these types of crimes aren’t effective or haven’t even been set up in the first place.

Ballanca also maintained that our society should feel at blame, first and foremost because in our day-to-day lives, we tend to forget to condemn less serious behaviors like hate speech or abusive rhetoric that is even reflected in the way we vote, which means that we usually tend to vote for the gangsters instead of those who discuss rationally and make use of arguments.

Another issue brought forward by the ombudsman was the malfunctioning of our sentencing system, where those who go to prison are segregated by the rest of society and nothing is done to rehabilitate them and integrate them back to society. Most importantly, said Ballanca, help for the mentally ill is completely inexistent.
