Kosovo’s PM, Albin Kurti has stated that his administration isn’t avoiding the obligation to establish an association of Serbian communes, but rather it is the country’s Constitution that doesn’t provide leeway for any association to be founded on an ethnic basis. In an interview for ‘Deutsche Welle”, Kurti also declared that Belgrade is playing a dangerous game in the region.
“Serbia is behaving in the Western Balkans, just like the Russian Federation, where the Serbian Republic in Bosnia is trying to become a Belorussia while wanting to turn Montenegro into a Ukraine. The truth of the matter is that Serbia doesn’t accept nations that aren’t EU members, as actual nations. Instead, they consider them temporary,” – said Kosovo’s premier.
In addition, Kurti gave details regarding the real issue he has with the Open Balkan initiative – an initiative that has the support of only 3 out of 6 countries in the Western Balkans.
“When they say Open Balkan, open for whom? Because we would need to be part of the European Union, not the Russian Federation or China. We oppose this kind of tendency. In order to have an open and free Balkan, Serbia will need to change first,” – said Kurti.
Lastly, Kurti maintained that he isn’t one of those leaders that believe in Balkan’s self-sufficiency, adding that when it comes to this three-party initiative as well as a final agreement with Serbia, there needs to be an absolute presence and participation of the European Union.
