Eight existing and former high-ranking officials have been arrested, including one house-arrest, following the operation of SPAK (Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime), regarding the police uniforms tender.
SPAK carried out searches in the suspects’ private residences and government offices, as the arrested officials are now being investigated for allegedly having been involved in corrupted affairs, back in 2020.
Around a year ago, the democratic parliamentary group of the opposition pressed charges against 2 cabinet ministers, 4 government officials responsible for public tenders and 2 private companies, who they were accused of having abused their power in the tender amounting to 27 million euros, which was meant to secure police with uniforms for the next 4 years.
In the opposition’s criminal complaint filed at SPAK, which Euronews Albania evaluated in detail, the democratic MPs accused internal minister, Sander Lleshaj, defense minister, Olta Xhaçka, the head of the Concentrated Purchasing Agency (ABP), Edlira Naqellari, members of the Commission of Offer Evaluation (KVO), Kreshnik Bejkaj, Mariglen Bazali and Fatmir Derhemi and companies “Marsi &AI” and D&E shpk, on allegations that they created the necessary conditions for the determination of the tender’s winner.
