The General Prosecutor of Albania, Olsian Çela, summarized in front of the Assembly the activities carried by the Prosecution Office.

Asked about the progress of the investigations termed as “hot cases”, the Albanian prosecutor general said that the institution is pending an assessment from the State Police.

“Due to the competences that the Prosecution has, the way the prosecution interacts with the State Police, at the moment a case is suspended to find the author, it is the competence of the prosecution to carry out to follow up the investigation to identify the author. The Prosecution enters in play at that moment when the State Police presents evidence in order to determine whether an investigation can be launched”, said Prosecutor General Çelaj.

However, the prosecutor general asserted that there is a huge backlog of cold cases.

“The stock of suspended cases, or unresolved crimes is relatively high and here we need a reexamination of the entire situation on the side of the State Police and we will give all the support necessary in carrying out the investigations”, he concluded.

While reporting on the state of crime for the year 2020, the general prosecutors raised his concern over the relatively low number of prosecutors and judges in the country.
