Former PM Sali Berisha said on Saturday that he isn’t planning to leave the Democratic Party, just because the United States is asking for it.

In a meeting with his supporters from Permet, Berisha recounted the meeting with the interim leader of the Democratic Party, Enkelejd Alibeaj, when the latter mentioned his ‘persona non-grata’ status by the US State Department.

Berisha said that in 1997, world leaders had called on him to resign, but he turned down their request.

Berisha warned that the Democratic Party is organizing large anti-government protests.

But according to Berisha, the DP needs to reunite first, and become a real opposition force, as the only means to achieve these objectives.

“We need to be on the streets protesting and confront this government face to face. But in order to do that, we need to be united first. In the last 8 years, Democrats have made extraordinary sacrifices. This is a call for unity. We went through a major crisis, but we’re heading towards its solution. The man who created the crisis has resigned”, Berisha said.
