The European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, has stated that Brussels supports the Rama-Meloni agreement.
“We support Italy regarding the protocol with Albania,” Brunner said in an interview with the Italian news agency ANSA.
He emphasized that Italy is a very important partner when it comes to migration and repatriation issues.
“I believe the country is trying to find new methods to ensure that repatriations become a reality, and in this regard, having such approaches is very important,” Brunner stated.
He added that European-level cooperation is needed to ensure that measures against illegal migration are effective in practice.
“We must work together to find solutions that work in practice, and I am currently working on creating a legal framework to support the 27 member states in carrying out repatriations efficiently. Therefore, we fully support this objective of Italy,” Brunner added.
The commissioner’s statement differs somewhat from his earlier remarks, in which he suggested that the Italy-Albania protocol could not override European migration regulations.
