International media have widely reported on the passing of Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës, and All Albania, Anastas Janullatos.

The news agency Reuters highlighted Janullatos’ role in rebuilding the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania after the fall of the communist regime and his dedication to interfaith dialogue.

“He was elected to lead the Church in 1992 after the fall of the communist regime, which had banned religion for decades. During his leadership, he became a vocal supporter of interfaith dialogue and helped the poor and displaced,” Reuters wrote.

The report also detailed his health treatment, noting that the Archbishop was initially hospitalized in Tirana for the flu, but his condition worsened, leading to his transfer to Athens on a military plane.

Janullatos passed away this Saturday due to multiple organ failure at Evangelismos Hospital.

France 24, in its article, emphasized the Archbishop’s diplomatic skills and his efforts to defend human rights during his three decades of service in Albania.

The article noted: “Anastasios, born in Piraeus, was a charismatic and diplomatic figure, known for his gentle demeanor and ability to build bridges between different faiths. He revived the Orthodox Church in a predominantly Muslim country and led with dedication for decades.”

France 24 also recalled the Archbishop’s health challenges in recent years, including treatments in Athens and his battle with COVID-19 in 2020, during which he spent 12 days in the hospital.

The media outlets underscore the spiritual and diplomatic legacy left by Archbishop Anastas, portraying him as a key figure in the modern history of the Albanian Orthodox Church and in fostering peaceful coexistence among religions in the region.
