The International Workers’ Day is a day to protest. In Albania, however, it is still regarded as a holiday or date to celebrate. Trade unions organized a protest in the center of Tirana, but citizens’ participation seems low.
“It’s a modest protest,” reports Euronews Albania journalist Brunilda Cami. “Trade unions have come together to ask for more rights for workers. The head of this protest earlier declared that this is no celebration day, as long as workers’ rights in Albania are not yet guaranteed. They have compiled a petition to send to policymakers, so that they can get solutions on workers’ problems,” she reports.
Even in Kosovo, small protests are being held on the International Workers’ Day. The trade union of Technical Workers of the Private Sector asks for better payments, while small business representatives called for local institutions to stop discrimination towards such businesses and allow justice to them.
