The Serbian president, Aleksandar Vucic has commented on Kosovo’s PM, Albin Kurti’s statements on a possible unification of Kosovo and Albania, asking the EU to react.

During a ceremony of inauguration for the construction site of the Belgrade-Budapest railway, Vucic said that if a similar statement would have been made by him, there would have been an immediate backlash.

“If I were to make a similar statement, all worldwide press would have reacted about the great Serbian hegemony,” – claimed Vucic.

The Serbian president expressed several reservations regarding the EU, directed mainly at Kosovo’s rapporteur at the European Parliament, Viola von Cramon.

Vucic accused von Cramon of not reacting to Kurti’s ‘Greater Albania’ statements, which according to him, only means that they don’t have good intentions when it comes to Serbia.

The railway connecting Belgrade to Budapest will cost 4 billion euros and stretch over 350 kilometers. Serbia is planning to cover the costs through loans that have been provided by China and Russia.

Construction is projected to last until mid-2024.

Hungary will also be paying for its share through a loan acquired by the Chinese Bank.

This project has attracted much criticism, from those who are wary of China’s increased influence in Europe. According to a recent Hungarian projection, it will take the country 2,500 years to pay back the loan, whereas Serbia will most likely need even more than that.
