During the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Prime Minister Albin Kurti has been commended for his strategy in challenging President Aleksandar Vucic. For Balkan Talks on Euronews Albania, publicist Nexhmedin Spahiu described the strategy as “short-term” and instead according to him, the real success can only be measured if Serbia ultimately recognizes Kosovo.

“The capitalization of Kosovo’s interests will be if he makes Vucic recognize Kosovo at the lowest cost possible”, said Spahiu.

According to the publicist, the essence of the dialogue remains behind the fact that Pristina must give something in exchange for its recognition, also asserted by French President Macron and US President Biden.

“The real essence of the dialogue stands at the question posed by Macron to Kurti, on what is Kosovo willing to give for its recognition. But in his letters, President Biden also asks the Serbian President to recognize Kosovo, while warning Kosovo’s President to prepare for difficult compromises”.

Spahiu believes that Kosovo’s allies must insist on finding a solution between the lines of the Association of Serb Municipalities and that Kurti must be very careful when it comes to discussing the volume of shared competencies.

Spahiu sees Kosovo as “America’s toddler” which is “looking for independence”, adding that if Kurti fails to get the country recognized by Serbia he will most likely be ousted.

“In a political sense, Kosovo is an American baby trying to make it walk. It is important that they are involved in the dialogue. If Kurti fails to get recognition from Serbia he will be ousted from power because for small nations a leader that only has his people’s support is not enough”, concluded Spahiu.
