The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said that with the formalization of the application for membership in the European Union, Kosovo is showing its Euro-Atlantic orientation.

“Today we are taking the first step towards EU membership. We will submit the membership application signed today to the Czech Presidency of the European Union. It is a historical moment with which we aim to open a new chapter”, said Kurti.

“Progress will depend on our commitment to deep and transformative reforms, to advance democracy, the rule of law, and economic development. The speed at which we move forward from here depends solely on us”, he further stated.

Kurti said that Kosovo’s progress depends on its merit, ability, and its fulfillment of the criteria set forth by the EU.

On Wednesday, President Vjosa Osmani, Prime Minister Albin Kurti, and Speaker of Parliament Glauk Konjufca signed Kosovo’s application document for membership in the European Union.

This was also followed by a prompt reaction from the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, who expressed through a video message posted on social media that “he has asked the West to tell him which of the five or six important documents they want [Serbia] to respect”.
