Albanian man sentenced to 18 years in prison for the massacre of Lushnja, arrested in Greece

Laert Haxhiu, who was sentenced in Albania to 18 years in prison, was arrested in Greece.

According to the police, Haxhiu, was caught with a forged Greek residence permit, under the name Mikis Askalidis, 32 years old, born in Georgia.

Laert Haxhiu is expected to be extradited to Albania.

In 2017, Lushnje Judicial District Court sentenced Haxhiu to 18 years in prison, for the criminal offenses of “Murder under qualifying circumstances”, attempted murder and “Unauthorized possession and production of weapons, explosive weapons and ammunition”.

Haxhiu is being tried in absentia for the massacre in Lushnje, for which Orgest Bilbili and Anterio Kaloshi were previously sentenced to life imprisonment.

Orgest Bilbili, Laert Haxhiu and Anterio Kaloshi are accused by Special Anti-Corruption Structure of the murder of Jurgen Hoxha and Zamir Latifi as well as the attempted murder of Xhulio Shkurti, Aldo Bare’s nephew, which happened in 2017.

In addition to the charge of murder under qualifying circumstances of one or more persons, they are also charged with “Committing criminal offenses within the criminal group”.
