The Committee on Legal Affairs decided to recommend the establishment a parliamentary commission that will probe into the alleged constitutional violations committed the President of the Republic Ilir Meta.
With 14 votes in favor and one against, the Committee on Legal Affairs approved the report compiled upon a request of 49 Socialist MPs against President Meta.
It is now up to the Assembly to decide whether it will set up a commission tasked to investigate the president; a procedure expected to take place this week in order to be within legal deadlines.
The Socialists aim to impeach the president following investigations into the alleged claims.
The chairman of the committee, Ulsi Manja, said the president has violated at least 6 six articles of the Constitution and has to be investigated.
According to the Manja, the main alleged violations are on principles of rule of law, presidential competencies, and separation of powers.
“There is nothing president-like in the behavior of the President, he has an absurd attitude which undresses the president from the presidential costume […] violations that infringe on the oath he has taken to respect the Constitution”, said Manja prior to calling on the members of the committee to set up the parliamentary commission to probe into the alleged accusations.
Today’s meeting took place without the presence of President Meta, who did not get the opportunity to provide his side of the story in response to the allegations.
The president justified his absence due to a “congested agenda” and told the Assembly that he would be ready to “clarify” the matter on the 10 of May.
