President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has posted a photo of a letter on her personal Instagram page, written by Erjola, a 16-year-old from Kurbin.

In the handwritten letter, Erjola thanks Von der Leyen for reconstructing her school that was seriously damaged after the 2019 earthquake.

“This letter touched me. It is not just a deeply personal account of her experience. It is also a forceful reminder of the good we can achieve as Europeans when we work together. In this case, the EU and Albania,” – wrote von der Leyen.

The high EU official brought back to the attention, EU’s maximal commitment in the last 2 years since Albania was hit by the 6.4 magnitude earthquake that took the lives of 51 people and injured hundreds of others.

The whole European Union swiftly mobilized for a country that is at the heart of our continent – and that I hope and I am convinced one day will also be part of our Union. Erjola expresses the same hope in her letter. “Today me, my friends feel true Europeans”, she writes,” – continued Von der Leyen.

The EU donated a total of €115 million euros for the reconstruction program following the November 2019 earthquake, concentrated mainly on two projects ‘EU for schools’ and ‘EU for culture’.

In a recent interview for Euronews Albania, EU ambassador to Albania, Luigi Soreca, who has also shared the 16-year-old’s letter on his social media accounts, said that so far, the donations emitted by the EU have gone to build 19 schools, another 22 are currently under construction and expected to be completed by March 2022, and 63 others will have been built by next November.

During her latest visit to Albania, the European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen inaugurated the ‘Korb Muca’ school and the ‘Europa’ kindergarten in Kruja, which were both reconstructed through EU funding.
