By the end of the week, North Macedonia’s president, Stevo Pendarovksi is expected to mandate the head of Social-Democratic Alliance, Dimitar Kovacevski, to form the new Macedonian government.

Political analysts foresee an orderly process and a government containing more than a few ministries – a direct result of the need to satisfy all parties who agreed to partake in the grand coalition. However, the very existence of the three-party system will be strictly dependent on the beginning or lack thereof, of EU negotiations.

“I believe that issues are only bound to begin after the government is formed and it is certain, that the biggest issue will be the one involving Bulgaria as well as the beginning of negotiations for EU membership because this will inherently influence the stability of the parliamentary majority. The main reason for this is the fact that the main narrative for all participating parties is centered around EU integration and if nothing is done in this respect by the first 6 months of 2022, there will be an ever-greater pressure within the government coalition to remain together or fall apart,” – said analyst, Petar Arsovksi.

According to journalist, Isen Saliu, the stability of the Macedonian government will depend on the stability of the Social-Democratic Alliance, which following Zoran Zaev’s resignation, is being struck by mounting frustration.

Analyst Arsovski and journalist Saliu share the same sentiment on the issue of snap elections, which might even have to take place next fall, if SDSM isn’t able to resolve all disagreements within.

The entire process of the formation of the new Macedonian government will have to wrap up by January 15.
