Democrat MP Enkelejd Alibeaj declared on Friday that the ruling majority cannot pick the new President with the votes of the ‘persona non-grata’.

Alibeaj emphasized that the opposition has a right to propose concrete names and that he had conveyed the stance of the Democratic Party to the ruling majority.

“We’ve agreed not only to participate in the process but participate in a real process, as the figure of the new president requires to. Above all else, we’ve offered to have a sincere process based on criteria, and procedures, this is the first imperative guarantee, it must symbolize the unity of the people”, Alibeaj said.

“The majority cannot pick the president alone. Edi Rama cannot play games. The right to make proposals belongs to the opposition. We proposed criteria. The president must be an anti-communist”, he added.

The first plenum on the new president is due May 16.

Taulant Balla, SP’s floor leader in parliament, asserted after meeting opposition representatives that some key points have been determined, but parties have yet to come up with specific names.
