Kosovo’s gold medalists Distria Krasniqi and Nora Gjakova have returned home to a hero’s welcome, after securing two world titles in Judo at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Thousands of citizens had gathered at the capital city’s square to welcome the two judo champions.

Krasniqi said she was very happy to bring a gold medal from the Olympics in her homeland and encouraged youngsters to work hard to fulfill their dreams.

“Today I am really happy to bring Kosovo a gold Olympic medal”, she said.

The other Olympic medalist, Nora Gjakova, also said that through commitment and hard work “everything is possible”.

“I’ve worked really hard and we achieved success when only a few believed in it. But here I am today, here in Kosovo, with the people of Kosovo, and with a gold medal from the Olympics”, said Gjakova.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti also attended the celebrations and said that Distria and Nora “wrote the history in Tokyo”.

“Three gold medals from three women, this sentence should be sufficient to win every debate on gender equality. Thank you to the girls, managers, and all those who contributed to the success we achieved in Tokyo”, said Kurti.

This is the second time that Kosovo has participated in the Olympic Games since declaring independence in 2008.
