“Justice must necessarily be swift and at the heights of what the public opinion is looking for. Reacting with the maximum penalty predicted by laws of the Republic of Albania”, declared Prime Minister Edi Rama over the brutal murder of an 8-year-old boy in a village near Fier.
The head of the executive referred to the author as “a barbarian” and that he was “left speechless” by the gruesome story.
“Nevertheless, everyone is impatiently waiting for the most extreme verdict on this barbarian, who thanks to the prompt reaction and identification was apprehended by the Police and is today behind bars. This is one of those stories that leave you speechless”, Rama added.
On Tuesday, an eight-year-old boy left home to go to school but when he did not return his parent grew concerned and filed a police report. His body was later found covered in mud at the house of their neighbor Klodian Calameni.
The 38-year-old was immediately arrested, while it has been learned that he had a violent past, including a criminal precedent after kidnapping a 16-year old girl, a crime for which he spent around 3 years behind bars.
On social media, many have called to bring back the death penalty, something that was also addressed by PM Rama during his speech.
“The death penalty will not avoid these things from happening”, said Rama.
The head of the Albanian government underlines that capital punishment is “neither possible”, “nor a magic stick that makes these issues disappear”.
“The case of the death punishment is something that’s been addressed a long time ago as an issue of our civilization for all EU countries and there’s been a long process where countries have taken several steps to abolish capital punishment based on countless research. Societies, even in the most developed societies, have this sort of people who are capable of going to the farthest point of what divides an animal from a human being”, said the prime minister.
