May 5 in Albania is the national day of remembrance for the Martyrs of the Homeland. Commemorative ceremonies were held across the country in honor of those who fell in the struggle for freedom.
In Durrës, attendance was lower compared to previous years. One of the veterans voiced concern over this trend, as families of veterans and institutional representatives gathered at the coastal city’s Mausoleum.
“People have become fewer, their mentalities are fading. Attendance is smaller and less spirited. It should be as revolutionary as it was during the war and afterward. The entire population should embrace this. The youth should follow in the footsteps of the partisans who fell as martyrs and come to honor them every May 5,” said Selim Rraça, a war veteran.
In Vlora’s Martyrs’ Cemetery, the fallen were honored with flower wreaths laid by family members and officials, as a gesture of respect for those who gave their lives for freedom. They emphasized that their remembrance should go beyond symbolism.
In Elbasan, tributes were also paid at the Martyrs’ Cemetery, marking this significant day that symbolizes the eternal gratitude and respect of the Albanian people toward those who fought for a better future.
Korça also honored and remembered the war martyrs, with many participants placing floral wreaths at the resting places of the fallen.
Likewise, Berat commemorated May 5 as Martyrs’ Day, with families of veterans gathering at the memorial cemetery. They highlighted the importance of preserving the values for which thousands of fighters sacrificed their lives.
